Translate the sentence
“I don’t need anything” can mean “please don’t make this a production.” A small gift with a specific reference says you paid attention without arriving with a balloon arch. Usually an excellent boundary.
Look for the repeat character
What turns up in every conversation? The dog. The garden. The book they are definitely going to finish. The third coffee that is apparently still the first coffee. Start there. An interest they actually have beats a personality you would like them to develop.
Check the boring detail that saves the gift
Find their shoe size. Compare it with the product’s stated range. Check whether the language on the socks suits the person who will open the package—and anyone watching. The joke should arrive before the awkward silence.
Keep the note short
“These reminded me of you” does most of the work. You do not need to explain the joke in three paragraphs. That is our job, apparently.
